Overview
Black Opal Beauty (also known as BLK/OPL) is a world-renowned beauty brand which caters to the diversity of deeper skin tones within the Black community. Founded in 1994, they sell an array of cosmetic and skincare products to Black consumers. By 2019, BLK/OPL was successfully acquired and officially Black-owned by current CEOs Desirée Rogers and Cheryl Mayberry-McKissack.
For this Advanced Graphic Design project, all graduate designers were tasked with doing an Emotional Website Redesign for any company's website or app. As someone passionate about celebrating Black culture, beauty, and diversity, I chose to advance the user experience of Black Opal Beauty's mobile website.
Background
Role: UX Designer, Graphic Designer
Timeframe: April 2024 (1 Week)
Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Figma
Skills: Wireframing, Graphic Design, UX Design
Project Goal: The official deliverables for the Emotional Website Redesign were to create at least 8 screens of a current company website and redesigning them with a new color scheme, layout, and iconography.
The overall design process included sketches, wireframing, color theory, mood board curation, user personas, and ultimately implementing designs onto a high-fidelity screens.
Pain Points ❌
The Black Opal Beauty website lacks a cohesive brand identity, with inconsistencies in typography, color scheme, visual hierarchy, and overall user experience. This lack of uniformity can affect brand recognition and user engagement.
My Proposed Solution ✅
Develop a comprehensive redesign proposal that enhances brand consistency, improves usability, and elevates the overall aesthetic to better reflect Black Opal Beauty’s identity and connect with its target audience.

Wireframe Synopsis 📱
While drafting the wireframes for the Emotional Website Redesign of the Black Opal Beauty mobile website, the aim was to simplify the format to avoid inundating users. To create a more intuitive layout with cohesive branding across all pages, I prioritized a streamlined navigation system, consistent typography and color schemes, and user-friendly touchpoints that enhanced accessibility and engagement (such as the call-to-action buttons at the top of the home page and main menu).

Reflections 🔆
Mood Boards Are a Foundational Tool
Creating mood boards can help establish a clear visual direction during the design process. Before creating the wireframes, the mood board worked best when creating it digitally in Photoshop or Figma, then pasting along side the mid-fidelity and high-fidelity versions. Overall, the mood boards created during this UX design project ensured that the redesigned mobile experience aligned with Black Opal Beauty’s new hypothetical brand identity.
Balance Simplicity and Brand Identity
Through intentional design choices, I ensured that the mobile experience remained visually engaging yet intuitive, simplifying navigation without compromising Black Opal Beauty’s bold and sophisticated brand identity.
